I cannot believe that not ONE person tried to either block traffic from hitting the poor man as he lay on the street or that no one attempted to hold his hand or comfort him. What in the world is the matter with people anymore? Is compassion only something to extend to ourselves or those we know? Lord I hope we have not become that selfish or cllous. Who cares who he is. He is a human being for God's sake and deserved so much better than to be left in the middle of the street. Sickening is what that was but the saddest part is that everyone of those people who drove by, walked by or stared at Mr. Torres will have some lame excuse as to why they did nothing to excuse their behavior. I bet not one of them feels remorse. I send my prayers to the Torres family. I wish I had been there. I could never have treated another human being in that way.

Walking the walk. I love what Neil is doing at NCC, and as always, there is no such thing as coincidence. God put you in the path of Community 4:12. you both fall under the all action no talk school of thought. That's what Christ did, and the mind set of a true Christ-follower. Too many churches/believers talk and plan and form committees and boards and 5 years later they're still talking and planning. Lives and eternity is at stake, the enemy doesn't wait for a quorum or majority to strike, we can't afford to either. God bless you all, and your genuine hearts.

Thanks for the update on this story. It is somewhat encouraging to me to see that at least a passively helpful role was taken by two bystanders. The moral compass is definitely still in need of re-calibration...

911 calls were made in widely viewed hit-and-run

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Police released audio Friday of two 911 calls made after 78-year-old Angel Arce Torres was struck by a car and then left in the street by passing motorists and pedestrians.

The recordings were released two days after police Chief Daryl Roberts publicized a surveillance video of a car striking Torres and leaving him paralyzed. No one in the video stepped forward to help Torres, prompting Roberts to declare, ''We no longer have a moral compass.'' City officials later acknowledged that police received four 911 calls.

K-love commented today, 5/19/08: from China’s tragedy more people will be lead to Christ. Survivors were rescued a week after being trapped under rubble – what a miracle.

Imagine the testimony and impact a Christian survivor would have to the Glory of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Pray for the areas hit by natural disasters in the past 2 years. Pray for continued recovery, healing and for God’s comfort and strength.

In God’s Love,

Hi Neil,

Your visit to my blog inspired a return visit and I'm blessed by what I'm reading here. Great stuff!

I had to comment on this post having just completed a diocese-required two-day anti-racism training session. Your post couldn't be more timely! We seminarians going through the training were struck by how out-of-touch with present-day realities people addressing this issue are.

Case in point: These days many graduates of my school are refused ordination in our own denomination because we are too committed to Scripture to go along with the teachings-du-jour of the church's upper echelons. As a result, many of my classmates are being ordained by, and hired by, African bishops. This being the case, if we can't work with -- and indeed serve UNDER -- people of other races, we're in serious trouble!

Meanwhile the folks leading our anti-racism training session have much the same mindset as Wright and were unwilling to even discuss our experiences of international interracial cooperation.

I mentioned this to the pastor I work for yesterday, and he and I have come to the same conclusion: what we're seeing is members of the 60s generation who just aren't able to get over themselves. The Rev Wright -- along with the powers-that-be in the denominational hierarchies (many of whom are incredibly racist under their egalitarian veneer) -- are hopelessly stuck in the world they were raised in, a world that existed 40 years ago and has little resemblance to the place the rest of us live in now.

Life is strange.

Anyway, good post, and I'm glad you spoke up about it!

Fantastic post! The world really does look different through the eyes of Jesus and it really would change the way we think. It's definitely something we need to condition ourselves for.
